Re
The New School
These are notes of happenings at The New School.

Open House
-
26
August 2005 -- The
Theory & Practice Group hosted an open house for prospective
students at the campus on Thursday 18 August 2005. The event
was a great success. Several new families came and toured the
campus. Students, diplomates, staff members, and parents were
all on hand to talk to visitors and answer their
questions. Congratulations and thanks are due to those
who worked to prepare the building and make the event a
success. Special thanks is due to Jared Cannon who prepared
elegant refreshments. On-going contacts were renewed and at least
one new student has already enrolled as a result of the event. --

Summer Revels Great Again.
-
26
August 2005 -- Another
great session of Summer Revels came to a close on Friday 19 August
2005 with a barbeque and picnic. The week had begun with a
camping trip to Elk
Neck State Park in Maryland. The camping was great fun and a
real challenge. Swimming was beautiful on the first day; the
sunset over the bay with the warm waters and the lapping waves was
like paradise -- or at least like the seas of Perelandra.
The second day was an exercise in living in weather; after a
beautiful sun rise, it rained from mid-morning until we went to
sleep. Fortunately the mild temperatures made this fun rather
than painful. The third day was beautiful again. It was
all great fun -- building a tarp to keep the fire going was
especially interesting.
-
Other
highlights of this session of Summer Revels included: a trip
to the Delaware
Beach with a sleep over at the School afterwards; day trips to
the Brandywine
Zoo and to Valley
Garden Park and to Clementon
(Amusement and Water) Park; swimming in the creek and
daily swimming in the pool; croquet; games; mosaics; Pirate
Convention Day (including the making of stuffed parrots); other
projects and all of the usual pleasant summertime activities of the
camp.
Summer Revels will be held again next year, to learn more visit the Summer
Revels website. --

- Members of the School try
to hear Mozart and Mahler.
-
12 May 2004 -- Ten
members of School Meeting attended the dress rehearsal of the Delaware
Symphony, tonight. The program included two works, which
spanned about two hundred years of symphonic development. They
were Mozart's
Piano concerto No. 21 (1785) and Mahler's
Symphony No. 5 (1909). The discussion afterward centered around
the differences and challenges presented in the two pieces.
Interesting things were said about Mahler's seeming use of structure,
rather than tonal tension, as the medium of his music. The
progression from classic polyphony toward the early 20th Century
experiments with form seem worth more consideration and experience. It
was a fun and challenging evening. --

rehearsal of Mozart's "The Magic Flute" on Thursday 29 April
2004. The production was light and fun. A high compliment
was paid by several of the students who said, "It was bizarrely
surreal." The evening was made possible by the Grand
Opera House and Opera
Delaware. -- JRH
